Enrichment Instructors

CWLA Enrichment Instructors are professional artists and educators in the community selected not only for their artistic talent, but their ability to engage students and exhibit classroom management skills. Below are examples of subjects our instructors have taught successfully in after school programs, summer programs and in-school residencies:

CWLA is advancing the field of extended learning by identifying, training and supervising passionate, creative and highly motivated instructors to facilitate a unique and successful learning experience for all students. We have acquired a network of over 100 Enrichment Instructors with expertise in arts, music, dance, recreation, math, science, theater and more. Our goal is to continue the expansion and education of our network through professional development workshops and curriculum training sessions, while also placing our instructors in programs where they can share their talents with the youth of Louisiana.

Stepping UP: Mapping Your Education for Your Career Destination

Stepping UP consists of a series of workshops to fit your student’s needs. This CWLA curriculum was developed targeting junior high and high school students and include self-assessment tests, activities to identify long-term interests, and lessons on criteria to consider when selecting a high school, and or eventually college. Increased training in these areas can affect the outcome of graduation rates, pursuit of collegiate education (or trade school), and the over-arching advancement of young leaders developing in our New Orleans community. In the process of participating in the workshops and reinforced activities throughout the semester, the students gain a greater sense of self-reliance and empowerment in their own lives.  Stepping UP also provides guest speakers, in addition to the lessons, which include local professionals as well as high school and college admission counselors. Past guest speakers have come from:  Gap Inc., University of New Orleans, GNO Inc., The New Orleans Saints, Loyola University, and many others.

Track One (junior high grades 6th, 7th, and 8th)

Stepping UP: Track One is a multi-faceted program that provides students with the information, tools, and resources to leverage the numerous opportunities available within the New Orleans High School system, in order for students to make an informed decision about choosing a high school that is aligned with their long-term objectives. Workshops also include high school application assistance and parent information sessions.

Track Two (high school students)

The goal of Stepping UP: Track Two workshops are to provide workforce readiness training and to promote post-secondary education options.  Workshops include developing a post – high school educational plan, exploring the importance of internships and part time jobs to build skills and gain experience, completing applications, portraying a professional appearance, developing resumes that highlight transferable skills, mastering the interview process, and understanding professional behavior in the workplace.

The comprehensive curricula involve innovative activities that engage not only the students, but also the parents and the community.  Local professional’s in a variety of industries serve as mentors to the students through on-school site presentations and workshops.  The partnerships developed not only play a vital role in the student’s education and occupational choice, but also serve to change stakeholder’s perception of their role in the long-term development and success of the students of New Orleans. Engaging administration, parents and community in active support of education and career exploration and choice create a vital link to that aide middle and high school students in making successful transitions into adult workplace roles.
