Students at the CWLA Summer Program at the International School of Louisiana had a blast parading through the halls during this year’s camp. “The parade was a great way to end camp,” said Site Director, Todd Shaffer. Under the direction of Mr. Lillion, students in the puppetry class were able to create stick and sock puppets to show-off during the parade. Additional students, under the direction of Mr. Jordan, accompanied the parade with drumming.

“Our theme this year was Camp Be Kind and every student strived to follow this theme throughout the summer,” said Shaffer, “All of our staff are very proud of the work each student put into the camp and are looking forward to beginning afterschool programming in the fall!”

NEW ORLEANS, LA- On Tuesday, May 15, 2012, students from Community Works of Louisiana’s 21st Century Community Learning Center AfterSchool program presented an art display made from recycled Mardi Gras beads along with a plethora of beads, collected since the Mardi Gras season, to Arc of Greater New Orleans.

The beads were collected for Community Works’ Recycle Krewe Project which was made possible through a State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant. Community Works’ afterschool programs located at the International School of Louisiana, ARISE Academy, and Habans Elementary participated in the Recycle Krewe Project.

“Recycle Krewe allowed our youth to learn about reusing and recycling in a creative way,” said Todd Shaffer, Site- Coordinator at the International School of Louisiana. “Presenting this display to Arc and having the students see the impact of their work is crucial to Community Works’ programming and service-learning initiatives.”

Community Works strives to bring extended learning opportunities to youth throughout the New Orleans area. Specializing in offering afterschool and summer programs, Community Works, focuses on offering its youth access to multiple creative disciplines while still focusing on English/Language Arts and Math skills.
